Drink deep in the morning…

musical-teensHave you ever listened to your teenage son’s music?

I’m not a huge fan of the… I’ll just call it ‘sound’… that my son likes – but, I caught the words on one of the songs from a favorite band of his and I couldn’t get them out of my mind.

“Drink deep in the morning…”

The song is called “American Noise” and it talks about all the influences we have around us… all of the distractions… and breaking through that American Noise. Our culture is full of distraction… and even the good can be a distraction.

“Drink deep in the morning…”

When I worked with the college group at our church, I was blessed to experience a spontaneous moment that was life changing. Two of the girls in the group were on a retreat with me and after one session we ended up drawing on this board/paper in the back of the room. We drew a cross and started filling it with all of the things that keep our focus away from Jesus.

“Anger”
“Work”
“Busy-ness”
“Fashion”
“Outer appearance”

We kept writing…

“Family”
“Friends”
“Boyfriends”
“School”
“Achievement”

And continued still…

“Church” (*gasp*)
“Bible Study” (*double-gasp*)

As we wrote we realized that even “good” things can take our eyes from Jesus.
…even good things can distract us…

So – how do we fix our eyes on Him and cut through the noise of our world?

I found the answer in this unexpected place… a song on my son’s Skillet CD…

“Drink deep in the morning…”

Drink… deep…

Doesn’t that sound refreshing?
Come to the well of LIVING water…

Blast that worship and praise music to fill your mind… dig deep into the Word… dwell in the presence of your King to cut through the noise that we know will come as the day unfolds.

“Drink deep in the morning…”

I’m not a big fan of Skillet, but I hadn’t heard this one. I like it. Thanks for sharing!
