Thanksgiving before the miracle

Thanksgiving felt different this year.

So do the days leading up to Christmas…

For you too?

I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Perhaps I am more aware of the motions I tend to go through preparing for the holidays…
And my heart longs to see more…
To dig deeper into what we are truly celebrating.

Like many others, I spent the days of November sharing on Facebook something I was thankful for.

Such a simple thing… and maybe another one of those ‘going through the motions’ things I’m wrestling with now. I’ll admit that I didn’t necessarily feel thankful every day of November; however, there is value in choosing to be disciplined to seek righteousness… even when we might not feel like it.

In fact, the daily discipline of sharing something to be thankful for in November was a perfect preparation for the coming celebration of our Savior’s birth, don’t you think?

Sometimes we have to search deep to find something we are thankful for.
Sometimes ‘they’ don’t look like treasures worthy of thanks…
Sometimes the treasures are disguised or hiding… and we have to dig deep for them.

But, they are there… and even when we don’t feel like it – digging for and sharing our gratitude changes us.

In Ann Voskamp’s book, One Thousand Gifts, she says, “Thanksgiving always precedes the miracle.”

When we choose to offer thanksgiving, we are changed ~ our eyes opened.

We see the beautiful.
We see the miracle.
We see the treasure.

How appropriate that Thanksgiving comes before we celebrate Christmas.
